August 4th is Champagne Day

Party & Entertaining Guide

Having a party?  Wondering how much wine or spirits to have on hand?

Determine how many guests you expect, multiply that number by the number or hours your party is scheduled to last and that will give you the number of servings based on "one serving per hour per person".  For example:  if you will have 25 guests and your party will last four hours, multiply 25 x 4 for a total of 100.  You should plan on 100 servings.

If you are serving wine and/or champagne, here's a guide on how many 5 oz. servings you can expect from different sized bottles:

750 ML (25.4 oz.) 5 Servings
1 Liter (33.8 oz.) 6 Servings
1.5 Liter (50.7 oz.) 10 Servings
3 Liter (101 oz.) 20 Servings
4 Liter (135 oz.) 27 Servings

If you are serving liquor for mixed drinks, here's a guide on how many 1.5 oz. liquor servings per bottle:

750 ML (25.4 oz.) 16 Servings
1 Liter (33.8 oz.) 22 Servings
1.75 Liter (59.2 oz.) 39 Servings

Did You Know? Wine Fun Facts:

  • It takes 625 grapes to make one bottle of wine.
  • In the 1600s, a blind Benedictine monk departed from the usual practice of sealing wine bottles with cloth. Carbon dioxide from fermentation can escape through cloth. But he sealed his bottles with cork. Result - sparkling wine. Oh, let's not forget to tell you the monk's name - Dom Perignon.
  • The markup on wine in restaurants is as much as 300% or more.  Make sure you get what you ordered as making substitutions with cheaper wines is one way restaurants boost profitability.  Be particularly careful when ordering wine by the glass.  Ask you waiter to pour the wine at the table.  It may be more economical to order a bottle of wine rather than by the glass.  When ordering by the glass, waiters are trained to repour after you have had a sip or two rather than when your glass is empty.  And order the cheapest wine on the menu.  Sometimes those wines are very good.

A Little Bit of Wine Humor...

For all of us who are married, were married, wish you were married, or wish you weren't married, this is something to smile about the next time you open a bottle of wine:

Bottle of Wine

Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride.
With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.
"What's in the bag?" asked the old woman.
Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine I got it for my husband."
The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said, "Good trade."

A Little Bit of Wine Humor...

Men are like a fine wine. They start out as grapes. It's our job to stomp them, and then keep them in the dark until they mature. And hopefully they'll turn out to be something we would like to have dinner with.
