Unlike area
cemeteries where Boy Scouts and other volunteers have cleaned up the sites for Eagle Scout advancements or groups have worked together as a
community efforts, in Fairview a youth has cleaned up several cemeteries by
himself.
Zachary Pyle, 16, a Junior at Karns City High School, started four years ago
to clean up long neglected area cemeteries. He has completed work on two
cemeteries and is nearing completion on the third.
The long neglected cemetery, that had been the burial site of many members
of what until recently had been St. Peters Reformed Church, had old sandstone
grave markers with the names almost all unreadable, and many were knocked over
or fell over, and some were broken.
Pyle cleaned up the site, removing brush and other things from the
graveyard, repairing some of the markers and straightening others. Grass has been
planted, and in some areas stones surround flower beds that Pyle planted. The
oldest readable stone is dated 1830. The site is surrounded by old mine shafts and
steep banks above the mine sites.
The two other cemeteries he has cleaned up are the
Collins Catholic Cemetery and the Hiles Cemetery near Fredericksburg.
In recognition of Pyle's work, the Fairview Borough Council recognized him
and Jeff Shumaker, Council President presented the youth with a savings bond, at the site of the Fairview
cemetery where he had been working. |
