Thanksgiving Holiday Directory

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

Thanksgiving Proclamation:

    Thanksgiving, 1864, was proclaimed by President Abraham Lincoln in these words:
    "It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year...to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their camps, and our sailors on the rivers and seas, with unusual health.
    "He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while He has opened to us new sources of wealth, and has crowned the labor of our working men in every department of industry with abundant rewards.
    "Moreover, He has been pleased to animate and inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage and resolution sufficient for the great trial ... into which we have been brought by cause of freedom and humanity ...
    "Now, therefore, I .... do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may e then, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the universe.
    "And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid, that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust, and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the great Disposer of events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling-place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations."

The First Thanksgiving Proclamation
June 29, 1676

On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unanimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving, our first. That proclamation is reproduced here in the same language and spelling as the original:

"The Holy God having by a long and Continual Series of his Afflictive dispensations in and by the present War with the Heathen Natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his own Covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgments he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his Footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular Intimations of his Fatherly Compassion, and regard; reserving many of our Towns from Desolation Threatened, and attempted by the Enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our Confederates many signal Advantages against them, without such Disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, It certainly bespeaks our positive Thankfulness, when our Enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many Intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our Complaints in the time of pressing Afflictions:

The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favour, many Particulars of which mercy might be Instanced, but we doubt not those who are sensible of God's Afflictions, have been as diligent to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as a People offering Praise and thereby glorifying Him; the Council doth commend it to the Respective Ministers, Elders and people of this Jurisdiction; Solemnly and seriously to keep the same Beseeching that being persuaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and souls as a living and acceptable Service unto God by Jesus Christ."

Thanksgiving Day Prayer

We give thanks, O God, for our plentiful harvest, for shielding our land safe from enemy invasion, for keeping our homes free of government intervention.  Help us to use wisely the gifts we are intended to use.  Let those of us who receive much, give generously from our abundance.  May those of us whose needs are met through the gifts of others be thankful

A Thanksgiving Day Prayer
Author Unknown
(We've had this poem on a little card that we have had packed away
in our Thanksgiving decorations for years.
We do not know where it came from or who wrote it.)

Lord,
We humbly ask Thy blessing
on the turkey and the dressing,
on the yams and cranberry jelly,
and the pickles from the deli.

Bless the apple pie and tea,
bless each and every calorie.
Let us enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.
Tomorrow we can all get thinner.

For all Thy help along the way
we're thankful this Thanksgiving Day.
We're thankful too, for all our dear ones,
for all the far away and near ones.

Although we may be far apart,
we're together in my heart.
Keep us in Thy loving care,
This is my Thanksgiving prayer.

P.S.  Anyone who wishes may help with the dishes.

Thanksgiving Poems

A Thanksgiving Poem

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned -
The dark meat and white
But I fought the temptation
With all of my might.

Tossing and turning
With anticipation
The thought of a snack
Became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge,
Full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey
And buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots,
Beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling
So plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling,
Floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding
And a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell
As I soared past the trees....
Happy eating to all -
Pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty,
May your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy
Have nary a lump,
May your yams be delicious
May your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off of your thighs.

May your Thanksgiving be blessed!!

I like the taste of turkey
Anytime throughout the year.
But it never seems to taste as good,
As when Thanksgiving's here.

Could it be all the trimmings,
That are cooked with it to eat?
I think it's Thanksgiving at Grandma's
That makes it such a treat!

Thanksgiving
By Edgar A. Guest

Give me the end of the year an' its fun
When most of the plannin' an' toilin' is done;
Bring all the wanderers home to the nest,
Let me sit down with the ones I love best,
Hear the old voices still ringin' with song,
See the old faces unblemished by wrong,
See the old table with all of its chairs
An' I'll put soul in my Thanksgivin' prayers.

Thanksgiving

At Plymouth Rock the pilgrims land.
The first winter tough, over half had died.
New found friends of the Indians made,
the Wampanoags generosity provided aid.

Seeds were sown, harvest reaped by hand,
the tribe teaching ways to work the land.
Fish to richen earth, for the corn to grow,
cooperation proof for a great land to show.

Invite of the tribe to show them care,
who came with their own food to share.
Living together that first experiment,
shows it possible, gave encouragement.

Thanksgiving for the harvest filled,
thankfulness to God who multiplies.
Their gratitude for having survived,
thanks for friends and God’s supplies.

Holiday tradition now in America,
turkey, dressings, and all the trimmings.
Family, friends, employment all,
we give our thanks to God for life.

Thanksgiving Humor

     One year at Thanksgiving my Mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, My mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish game hen, and inserted it into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey. She put it back in the oven.
     When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird.
     With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, " Patricia, you killed a pregnant bird!"
     At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took the whole family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs.

Thanksgiving Weather Forecast
(Thanks, Betty & RP)

    Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.
    During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.
    A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.
    Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

Compliments of RP

~~~~~
This story was told to me by a college professor. He was relaying a story he heard earlier and this is what he told me about.
    He was approached after class by a young woman that wanted to compliment him on his lecture. The topic of the lecture was about marriages and why some go bad. She was the granddaughter of a couple that had been married for nearly 50 years. To his delight, everything was great. Especially since the wife in the relationship was able to rectify a small problem they had for nearly the entire relationship.
    Apparently, the husband had a seriously bad habit. Every morning when he woke up he would fart. A very loud, smelly, and down right distasteful fart. She was concerned that it was a medical problem and so she made him go to the doctor and every time he would come home and say that the doctor gave him a clean bill of health. And so the next morning he would let out a loud fart and she would also in turn yell at him and warn him that one day, despite what doctors say, that he is going to fart his guts out. He then would chuckle, fluff the sheets, make a crack about it being a normal part of life, and go about his business.
    Well one morning, she woke up early and went into the kitchen to start on Thanksgiving dinner. She made the cranberry sauce, and the yams, and then started on the turkey. She pulled out all the giblets, gizzards, and the neck and set them aside when brilliance struck. She took the bowl, tip-toed down the hall, opened the bedroom door oh-so-quietly, gently pulled back the blankets and sheets, cautiously pulled back his jockey shorts, and proceeded to place the turkey parts in his briefs. She then replaced all of the garments and went back into the kitchen to do her work.
    Well about an hour went by and it was time, she waited for the alarm, and then like clock-work, she heard the ever-so-pungent ass-trumpeting. But this time it was followed by a scream and footsteps to the bathroom where it all ended with a loud slam of the bathroom door. It took everything in her power to keep from doubling over in laughter. It took her about 18-20 minutes to compose herself long enough to check on her dear husband, she found him coming out of the bathroom white as a sheet. He stopped, looked at her and said "Honey, I am so sorry. All those years I have done that horribly nasty thing and I got away with it. I am so sorry."
    Ever so comely she asked him what happened, and he said, "Well, you know all those times you said that one day I would fart my guts out. Well, today it happened" He lifted his hand, produced his index and middle finger and said, "But by the grace of God and these two fingers I got them all back in!!"
    Hope you understand the punch line. Have a good day!
