The word "telegraph" comes from the
Greek words "tele" which means "afar" and "graphein",
which means to write.

Three Little Words
(from E-mail...Thanks for sharing Denny!)
I suppose some degree of commerce would grind to a halt if telephone solicitors weren't able to call people at home during dinner hour. But that doesn't make having your dinner hour interrupted any more pleasant.
Now Steve Rubenstein, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, has proposed "Three Little Words" based on his brief experience in a telemarketing operation that would stop the nuisance for all time. The three little words are "Hold On, Please." Saying this while putting down your phone and walking off instead of hanging up immediately would make each telemarketing call so time-consuming that boiler rooms would grind to a halt. When you eventually hear the phone company's beep-beep-beep tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. This might be one of those articles you'll want to e-mail to your friends. Three little words that eliminate telephone soliciting.

We received this in our E-mail. Although
the story could be accurate, the #77 feature is an emergency number that was
once active only in the state of Virginia. #77 should NOT be dialed - use
9-1-1!!!
"I never even knew about this #77 feature! This actually happened to
someone's daughter. Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the
Saturday before New Year's and it was about 1 PM in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up
behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and college age) and have always told them never to pull over for
an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a gas station, etc. So Lauren had actually listened to her parent's
advice, and promptly called #77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to
tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to
see if there was a police car where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already on the
way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the
car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground --
the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman
alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You
obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e., put on your hazard lights) or call #77 like Lauren did. Too bad the cell
phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information. So now it's your turn to let your friends know about #77."

In 2000 the 724 and 412 area codes in
Western Pennsylvania received an "overlay" of a new area code number
of 878. An "overlay" means all customers in the 724 and 412 area
codes will keep their current area code and phone number. The new area
code 878 will be distributed to new customers and requests for additional
lines. As a result, it is possible for neighbors and even new lines within
the same house to have different area codes.
To differential between a phone number
with 724 and 878 area codes, customers will need to dial ten digits (area code
and phone number) when making calls within or to the 724, 412, or the 878 area
codes beginning July 12, 2001.
The "overlay" will not affect
the cost of a call. Local calls are still local calls and toll calls will
remain toll calls.
In preparation for the mandatory
ten-digit dialing, be sure to re-program the speed dial numbers on your
telephone.

AT&T is reportedly interested in buying America On Line. If this
occurs, federal government regulators are concerned that the merger of the two

I don't understand these complaints about the Post Office. Time was, you could put a two-cent stamp on a letter and mail it, and it would arrive at the destination in two days. Now, you put a thirty-four-cent stamp on a letter and it takes four to five weeks to arrive. Still, only a penny a day!!

ICE - A Life-Saving Cell Phone Emergency Tip
Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.
ICE stands for
In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone
number of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do. Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW.
